Are the most highly cited articles the ones that are the most downloaded? A bibliometric study of IRRODL

Raidell Avello Martínez, Terry Anderson

Abstract

Publication of research, innovation, challenges and successes
is of critical importance to the evolution of more effective distance
education programming. Publication in peer reviewed journal format is
the most prestigious and the most widespread form of dissemination in
education and most other disciplines, thus the importance of
understanding what is published and its impact on both researchers and
practitioners. In this article we identify and classify the leading
articles in arguably the leading peer reviewed journals in this
discipline.

The journal The International Review of Research in Open and Distance Learning
(IRRODL) is a peer reviewed academic journal that has been published
since 2000. The journal has published between 3 and 6 issues annually
with between 50 and 111 research articles per volume. In order to assess
the general and the particular impact of highly cited articles this
work describes the main bibliometric indicators of the IRRODL journal
and these are compared with the total galley views in all formats, PDF,
HTML, EPUB and MP3, that IRRODL publishes. In addition to identifying
characteristics of the most widely cited articles this research
determines if there is a correlation between the articles most highly
cited by other publishing researchers and the number of views,
indicating interest from both practitioners and research communities.
The results show a significant and positive relationship between the
total number of citations and the number of views received by articles
published in the journal, indicating the impact of the journal extends
beyond active publishers to practitioner consumers.

The Effect of Innovation Types on the Performance of Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis

The Effect of Innovation Types on the Performance of Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis

Francis Boachie-Mensah, Innocent S. K. Acquah

Abstract

Innovativeness has been touted as one of the fundamental
instruments of growth strategies to enter new markets, to increase the
existing market share and to provide the company with a competitive
edge. Despite this acknowledgement, there is lack of research into how
innovation contributes to the performance of small and medium sized
enterprises. The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of
innovation on organisational performance of small and medium-sized
enterprises (SMEs) in the Sekondi-Takoradi metropolis. The research
design used was survey research design whilst the research approach was
quantitative research approach. Simple random sampling technique was
used to collect data from 243 owners/owner managers of SMEs in the
Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis through self-administered questionnaires.
Partial least squares (PLS) structural equation modelling (SEM) was used
to test the hypotheses postulated. The study revealed that all four
different types of innovation significantly influence organisational
performance positively, except the product innovation/organisational
performance relationship, which was positive but not significant. The
results also suggest that innovation accounted for more than fifty one
percent of the variation in organisational performance. It was,
therefore, recommended that managers of SMEs pay critical attention to
the implementation of innovation activities in their firms due to its
positive impact of performance.

Tiivistelmä:
Objective of the Study:

Global virtual team has become a commonplace in organizational structure
and been widely used in entrepreneurial teams, such as born globals.
Communication is recognized as a critical factor and challenge in GVT,
nevertheless, researchers have merely touched the field of communication
in global entrepreneurial virtual team. This study aimed to fill this
research gap and found out what can global entrepreneurial teams do to
achieve effective communication.

Methodology and the Theoretical Framework:

As very little literature existed about entrepreneurial GVT
communication, this study conducted a systematic literature review on
GVT communication in general and applied the synthesized findings to
entrepreneurial team literature.

Findings and Conclusions:

The research showed that while communication plays a vital role in GVT
functioning, it also specifically plays as a team performance factor, a
human resource practice, a leadership practice, a trust building factor,
a team member's boundary management strategy, an information delivery
tool, a knowledge sharing channel and a team process facilitator.
Factors that affect communication in entrepreneurial GVT include
leadership, culture, technology, trust, language, communication
behavior, communication channel, communication frequency/timing,
training, interpersonal relations, interaction, task interdependence,
communication wastes identification, degree of virtuality, coordination
and awareness. Some factors depend on each other and communication is
always a value that plays between these variables. To achieve effective
communication in entrepreneurial GVT, the practitioners should address
effective leadership practices.

Organizational culture and absorptive capacity: The meaning for SMEs
  (Book)

Fachbereich Informatik, Institut für Management, Universität Koblenz-Landau, Koblenz-Landau, Germany

Abstract

Firms are
increasingly collaborating with outside partners to access external
knowledge that will enable them to successfully innovate and remain
competitive in the marketplace. To apply external knowledge, they must
have a distinctive capacity to absorb knowledge. One of the main
influencing factors for absorptive capacity is a knowledge-friendly
organizational culture, because the knowledge absorbing behavior of
individuals can be better coordinated through implicit values and norms
than through structural coordination instruments. When focusing on an
organization's overall behavior, it is important to investigate in
detail how a knowledge-friendly organizational culture influences
absorptive capacity. Therefore, the author analysis the relationship
between organizational culture and absorptive capacity and shows how a
knowledge-friendly organizational culture should be designed to support
the absorption of external knowledge in SMEs. © Springer Fachmedien

Abstract:

Despite the vital role of paper publication and
citation in higher education institutions (HEIs), literature on
publication exercises is relatively scarce. There are a number of
factors which influence the rate of university publications and
citations. Accordingly, with a focus on policy perspectives, this paper
discusses publication exercises by addressing the factors that can
increase or decrease the rate of publication and citation in HEIs. The
investigated zones are divided into two macro and micro levels, in which
macro level deals with global policy and micro level is related to
local and university policies. The effective factors and their relevant
criteria are traced in all the aforementioned policies.

Effective Factors for Increasing University Publication and Citation Rate

Masoomeh Shahbazi-Moghadam, Hadi Salehi, Nader Ale Ebrahim, Marjan Mohammadjafari, Hossein Gholizadeh

Abstract

Despite the vital role of publication and citation in higher
education institutions, literature on publication exercises is
relatively scarce. There are a number of factors which influence the
rate of university publication and citation. Accordingly, with a focus
on policy perspectives, this paper discusses publication exercises by
addressing the factors that can boost or decrease publication rate for
HEI. The investigated zones are divided into two macro and micro levels,
in which macro level deals with global policy and micro level is
related to local and university policies. The effective factors and
their relevant criteria are traced in all the three aforementioned
policies.

Creating value through virtual teams: A current literature review

Creating value through virtual teams: A current literature review  (Article)

School of Information Systems and Technology, University of Wollongong, Wollongong, Australia

Abstract

Globally, virtual
teams (VT) as ICT-enabled emergent network organisation forms have
gained international validity by innovative organisations, with a
corresponding surge of interest in understanding how organisations can
leverage VT to create business value. Despite growing deliberations in
VT literature on managing VT, tasks and outcomes, however, creating
business value through VT remains an unresolved theoretical and
pragmatic conundrum. A review of prior relevant literature is essential
to advancing knowledge. The paucity of published review articles seems
to have impeded the field's accumulation of VT knowledge. This research,
therefore, reviews the current literature on case studies of VT to
address the question: What are organisational challenges in creating
business value through VT in the organisation? The key challenges found
in the literature are effective communication, knowledge sharing, trust,
and interpersonal skills in the new virtual boundary-less environment.
Drawing on the IT business value model, we also discuss their
resource-based implications.
